MEMBERSHIP REQUIREMENTS

REQUIREMENTS TO APPLY:

    

  • Must be at least 18 years old

  • Year-Round Members must live within 20 miles of the Village of Southampton

 

  • Seasonal Members must live within 20 miles of the Village of Southampton during Season 

       Season is Memorial day – Labor Day    

You can ONLY apply for Seasonal Membership if you plan to be employed for the full upcoming summer season as an ocean lifeguard, or have been actively employed for a full season in the last year under the unified command of Southampton Village, Southampton Town, East Hampton Village, East Hampton Town, Hampton’s Private Beach Club  or New York State as a certified ocean lifeguard. 

IT IS NOT NECESSARY TO BE CERTIFIED TO JOIN!   

ACTIVE MEMBER REQUIREMENTS: 

(once a member is accepted into SVOR);

ALL MEMBERS ARE  REQUIRED TO COMPLETE CERTIFICATIONS & CLASSES:

  • CPR:  by Red Cross or American Heart, annually 

(SVOR provides CPR classes for our current members - if members cannot attend our scheduled CPR classes they are responsible to get certified elsewhere. We will cover the cost for our classes.

  • Risk Management Compliance Classes (RMCs): brief on-line classes, annually​

  • National Incident Management System Classes (NIMS):  NIMS (100, 200 & 700).

On-line FEMA courses that only need to be completed 1 time. 

(You have sufficient time to complete these on-line classes)

SVOR Class A, Class B, Class C and Special Operations Advisor require the completion of  NIMS to be called out on rescues.

CLASS A MEMBER - OCEAN RESCUE SWIMMER REQUIREMENTS (Year-Round & Seasonal):      

You can apply for Class A without being certified if you have the intention to certify during the upcoming season, however you will be Auxiliary until you have a current ocean lifeguard certification.

  • Certification: Must possess a current ocean lifeguard certification –Suffolk County Department of Health Services Surf Level I or New York State accredited Ocean Lifeguard Certification.​

Class A (Ocean Lifeguard) Attendance Requirements

for Year-Round Members (Annually):
Must attend a minimum of:

  • 40% of SVOR General Meetings

       (12 monthly General Meetings)

  • 50% of SVOR drills

  • 40% of SVOR Lifeguarded Events

       (Approx 8 Lifeguarded Events)

  • 10% of Non-Lifeguarded Events with SVOR

  • 6 SVOR Lifeguard Trainings, Jet Ski

  • 10% SVOR Non Specific Lifeguard Trainings - Swimming, Conditioning

       (Approx 100 Non Specific Lifeguard Trainings

  • 10% of SVOR rescue calls

Class A Attendance (Ocean Lifeguard) Attendance Requirements

for Seasonal Members (Annually)

Season is Memorial Day–September 30th

(Many Seasonal Members leave for college in August)

During Season must attend a minimum of :

  • 1 SVOR meeting during season

 

  • 1 SVOR drill during season

  

  • 1 SVOR lifeguarded events during season

    

  • 6 SVOR lifeguard Trainings during season - unless member receives *SVOR Training Exemption for Employed Lifeguards (see below)

  • 10% of rescue calls during season

*SVOR Training Exemption for Employed Lifeguards: Seasonal Members and approved Class A Members who are currently employed for the full season as a lifeguard (as specified in the above employment requirements) that train regularly with their lifeguard agency are exempt from SVOR trainings

CLASS C MEMBER - STILL WATER RESCUE SWIMMER REQUIREMENTS (Year-round Only): ​

(Can only respond to rescue calls in the bay, ponds or pools. Cannot respond to rescue calls in the ocean)

  • Certification: Must possess a current Still Water lifeguard Certification recognized by Suffolk County Department of Health Services or New York State accredited.

Class C (Still Water Lifeguards) Attendance. Requirements for Year-Round Members

 (Annual):

Must attend a minimum of:

  • 40% of SVOR General Meetings

       (12 monthly General Meetings)

  • 50% of SVOR drills

  • 40% of SVOR Lifeguarded Events

       (Approx 8 Lifeguarded Events)

  • 10% of Non-Lifeguarded Events with SVOR

  • 6 SVOR Lifeguard Trainings, Jet Ski

  • 10% SVOR Non Specific Lifeguard Trainings - Swimming, Conditioning

       (Approx 100 Non Specific Lifeguard Trainings

  • 10% of SVOR bay / pond rescue calls

AUXILIARY MEMBER – Non Lifeguard Membership Class (Year-Round Only)

 (Cannot respond to rescue calls)

An Auxiliary  Member does not hold a Lifeguard Certification, but may plan to obtain one. Once an Auxiliary Member possesses a Lifeguard Certification his/her Membership Class is immediately upgraded. 

Auxiliary Attendance Requirements  (Annual):

Must attend a minimum of:

  • 40% of SVOR General Meeting

(12 monthly General Meetings)

  • 30% of SVOR lifeguarded events 

(Approx 8 Lifeguarded Events)

  • 30% of SVOR non-lifeguarded events 

   

Please note: There is an allowance for approved Excused Absences 

*Certain benefits are only extended to active year-round members 

If a seasonal member fulfills the year-round membership requirements that seasonal member will be entitled to the active year-round member benefits for that year.
