OCEAN LIFEGUARD CERTIFICATION COURSE INFO

Surf Level 1 Ocean Lifeguard Certification - authorized by Suffolk County

YOU MUST TRAIN WITH US TO BE CERTIFIED BY US!

RAIN OR SHINE 

  • If it's raining without thunder and lightning, regular training is on. 

  • If it's pouring or a there is a thunderstorm please meet under pavilion at Coopers. The will focus will be on technical and important classroom information.

FEES

Ocean Lifeguard Certification Course Fee:  

  • $165 for 1st time non-members

  • $65 for rectifying non-members

  • ​There is no certification fee for active Southampton Village Ocean Rescue Members, or  current Coopers LIfeguards

  • Southampton High School Students' fees will be covered by a donation 

Bring checks to Lifeguard training payable to the Village of Southampton

​CPR is required for lifeguards in New York State ANNUALLY
CPR Fee:

  • $65 SVOR Red Cross CPR class (includes pocket mask)

(this is not included in the Ocean Lifeguard Cert Fee)​

  • ​There is no certification fee for active Southampton Village Ocean Rescue Members, or currrent Coopers LIfeguards

REQUIREMENTS

REQUIREMENTS - 1st Time Certifications

Participants must:

  • Be 16 years of age by the scheduled test date

  • Complete a medical exam within 90 days prior to the test date

      Download Medical Form (must use this medical form)

  • 1st time certifying participant must attend a minimum of 10 complete training classes & can only miss 2 classes & those 2 classes cannot be consecutive classes 

  • Certifying lifeguards are responsible to read the Lifeguard Training Manual before the written exam. The manual will be downloadable, once the fee is paid and you have started the course.

  • CPR certify • Lifeguards in New York State are required to CPR certify annually.           (acceptable CPR courses: equivalent to Red Cross for the Professional Rescuer  / American Heart)

INITIAL EVALUATIONS - SWIMMING SKILL LEVEL

Initial Evaluations take place on the student’s first day, at the start of the class – during the first 30 minutes. Participants must be evaluated for swimming skills before beginning this course.

  • Must be able swim 50 yards in 35 seconds), without the use of goggles / fins, OR possess a current American Red Cross (ARC) Level II (Still Water or waterfront) Certification

  • Must successfully complete the prerequisite skills evaluation. (Failure to have attained the appropriate skill level could pose a safety threat to themselves and to others in the class)

  • Be able to swim 300 yards front crawl in the ocean, continuously demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing without goggles or fins.

​MAKE-UP CLASSES
Under extreme circumstances training officers may create additional make-up classes for dedicated participants who intend to take the certification final exams (written & practical) to become certified ocean lifeguards, who had legitimate excuses for missing classes.

  • Re-certifying Lifeguards must attend a minimum of the complete training classes 1-5 with a possibility of 1 make-up class either complete class 6 or 7

  • Re-certifying lifeguards are responsible read the Lifeguard Training Manual before the written exam.  Manual will be downloadable, once you start the course.

  • Certification must NOT have lapsed. If certification lapses lifeguard must take the full 1st time Surf Level 1 Lifeguard certification course

​MAKE-UP CLASSES
